Welcome to 8th Grade Science!!!
Welcome to Team 8B! I am so excited to have each and every one of you in my science class. For some of you this will be our second year together, and for others we will just be meeting for the first time tomorrow. Either way, I know that a great year lies ahead for all of us!!! I have so many exciting lessons and labs planned for us to explore in class, and as a team, 8B has many fun field trips and activities in the works for this school year!!! I just can't wait to get started!
This blog is a great tool for you (and your parents!) to use to stay organized, and on top of class assignments, homework and other other important Team 8B events that might be going on. When I write my blog I write as though I am speaking to my students, however I encourage parents to check in on here regularly as well. This will help us all work together to ensure the best possible year for everyone!
Again....welcome and I will see you in class tomorrow!

EOC Review
Today in class (or tomorrow if I did not see you yet!) we did our "diagnostic" for EOC reviewing.
For homework, please complete the corrections on the questions that you got wrong on the 'diagnostic' study guide.
This assignment is due: 3A- Weds May 18
4B; 5B and 6B- Thurs May 19
For each incorrect answer you will:
-identify the Learning Target (see targets below)
-Go to the text book (use online text book if needed!) for that Learning Target and find the answer in the section. Write the two to four sentences from the text book where you found the answer.
-Write a three-four sentence reflection about your thought process for that answer, where you think you made your mistake and how you will remember this concept for the EOC so hopefully you will not make the same mistake again!
-Write down any questions that you may have for me next to the question and highlight them so you will remember to ask in class!
The vocabulary list of all Vocab words from this year is located in your "resources" tab in CCL. PRINT IT OUT AND BRING IT TO SCHOOL TO USE!!!
Please do a thorough job on this because we are going to base the rest of the review that we do for EOC off of your questions from this assignment.
Remember that you will also be responsible for the section review for any Learning Targets that you missed 2 or more questions on...Get a head start on those so you will have plenty of class time for partner studying! Those section reviews will be due at the end of class on Weds/Thurs.

A Day Due Thurs May 12
Finish "journey on the rock cycle" assignment that we began in class. You will need to use your 'passport' and your rock cycle notes.
Writing Prompt:
Imagine you are a part of the rock cycle. Write a creative story following your journey on the rock cycle. Write about how you changed, the forces that changed you, and what kind of rock you changed into.
Use your “Journey on the Rock Cycle” passport as a guide. Be creative, have fun and demonstrate your knowledge of the rock cycle!
Use the Following R.A.F.T to help focus your writing
R.ole- A rock on the rock cycle
A.udiece-someone who knows nothing about the rock cycle
F.ormat- A travel article
T.opic-A journey on the rock cycle
RUBRIC:
10 pts--Completed written steps (1-12) that you traveled on the rock cycle
10 pts—Completed 12 drawings of steps you traveled on the rock cycle
20 pts—Writing Prompt: written demonstration of knowledge of the rock cycle through creative writing prompt. This indicates that student understands the forces/processes that shape the Earth, three different types of rocks and the ways in which these rocks are changed.
You will also need to complete the diagram on pgs 208-209 in the Green Book of the rock cycle. It must be neat, colored and labeled/with notes. This will be graded as part of your flip chart.

Make-up Assignment for Earthquake lab
If you were absent On May 2 or 3 then you will need to complete the alternate assignment for the Lab that we completed in class.
Please see me and I will go over it with you if I haven't already.
The directions are below:
Visit the site "Faultline: Earthquake history and science"
The link is on on the sidebar of the blog.
Read through all of the materials on the site focusing on how Earthquake technology has improved over the years. You might want to take some notes to help you with the following writing assignment
-Write 2-3 paragraph assessment of the improvements that have been made over the years in building in Earthquake zones, and Earthquake technology in general. Some questions you might want to answer in your writing: What techniques used to be used in the early 1900’s? How has earthquake technology changed between the two big quakes (1906 and 1989)? What does the future hold?

Earthquakes Flip Chart Notes
Due A day Monday May 2
Due B Day Tues May 3
The next section of notes in our flip chart is on Earthquakes. If you did not complete reading and taking notes in class you must complete it for homework. You should split your paper into 4 squares and label them the following: Where do Earthquakes occur?; What causes Earthquakes?;Faults at Tectonic Plates; and How do seismic waves travel?
Read and take notes from Chapter 8 section 5 in the green text book. This begins on page 284. You may access the green text book online the same as the blue one.
Please remember that your flip chart (in its entirety) will be worth 50 points at the end of this unit, so completing all of the components is VERY important, as well as making sure you DO NOT LOSE your flip chart!

Heredity Test Recycle
A Day Due Tues April 26
B Day Due Weds April 27
Directions for the test recycle are below. You will find the actual test questions in the Resources section of CCL. Remember this is an all or nothing recycle. You must complete all of the questions correctly and you will receive all of the allotted points added to your test grade. If you do not complete the recycle according to the directions or you do not answer the questions correctly you will NOT receive any points back.Type the answers directly into your CCL. Please number accordingly so that I can easily tell which questions are recycled.
Multiple Choice: You will receive 1 point back. You must find the answer in the book and correct your answer. Cite the two/three sentences from the book where you found the answer. Write down the page number where you found the answer. Then write a two/three sentence reflection on why you think you made your mistake and what steps you will take to make sure that you do not make this mistake again.
Short Response:You will receive ALL points back as long as you answer the questions correctly and follow the steps below. Look up the correct answer in the text book or your notes. Figure out where you went wrong with your answer. Go back and re-write your answer correctly. If you need to refresh your memory on how to write a short response answer in science please refer to the Short Response rubric in the Resource guide here on CCL. After you re-write your answer please write a 3/5 sentence reflection on why you think you made your mistake and what steps you will take to ensure that you do not make the same mistake again.

1. Compare and contrast the following methods of Cloning:
Somatic Cell Nuclear Twinning and Embryo Twinning
2. How does Somatic Cell Nuclear Transfer (SCNT) differ from the natural way of making an embryo?
3. “Click and Clone” to create a mouse clone.
Write the steps involved in cloning your mouse below.
What color coat will your mouse clone have?
4. Briefly explain the medical reasons for cloning.
5. List reasons, other than medical, for cloning.
6. What was the first organism cloned? How was it done? In what year did this take place?
7. What was the first organism to be cloned using nuclear transfer?
8. How were the first cows cloned?
9. What organism helped prove that cloning could be done using cells from males (up to this point all cloning experiments had been carried out using cells from females)? What was the organism’s name?
10. In what year was the first human clone created and what stage of development did it reach before it stopped growing?
11. Give at least two reasons why a clone might not necessarily be a carbon copy of the donor organism.
Name the two animals (they are the same species) that serve as an example.
12. Test your knowledge in “Is it Cloning or Not?”. What was your score and prize?
13. List and briefly explain the risks of cloning.
