LT#13 To-Do Lists are due on the following dates:
A Day MONDAY FEB 11
B Day TUESDAY FEB 12
Today we began our 2-day lesson on LT# 13. Please use your to-do list to keep track of assignments (both in class and out) and what is due for each one.
After today's class you should have answered the questions that went along with the video clip "Turning Elements into Compounds" as well as completing your data table for the Exploring Changes "minute to win it" Challenge.
Your homework is the EXPLAIN portion of the T-do list. read Unit 6 lesson 3 and complete either a Signs of Change booklet OR Charting Changes poster/collage. This is due next class period
(A day Tues 2/5,B Day Weds2/6) you will need it to help you with the next lab.
Below I have copy and pasted the entire To-do List in case you misplace yours:
To Do List—Learning Target #13 Physical and Chemical Changes
Essential Question: What Happens to matter when it changes?
SC.8.P.9.2 Differentiate between physical changes and chemical changes.
SC.8.P.9.1 Explore the Law of Conservation of Mass by demonstrating and concluding that mass is conserved when substances undergo physical and chemical changes.
Engage: (5pts—in class; both questions must be attempted)
Video—NOVA How Elements Form Compounds
1.) Observe the two chemical reactions that occur in this film clip. Describe everything that you see occur during these changes.
2.) What happens to the two substances after the reaction occurs? Explain.
Explore:
PHYSICAL AND CHEMICAL CHANGE CHALLENGE! 2/1 and 2/5
Students rotate through 6 stations observing physical properties of substances and distinguishing between physical and Chemical Changes.
-Complete data table including observed physical properties and prediction with evidence provided for each station. (20 pts—in class)
AND
BAGGIE BLAST!!! 2/6 and 2/7
Students will explore the Law of Conservation of Mass
Complete a 4Square Lab report w/lab group (20pts—in class; directions/rubric will be provided)
Explain:
Unit 6 Lesson 3 Physical and Chemical Changes
STUDENT CHOICE (15points—Homework)
SIGNS OF CHANGE
Students read Holt Science Fusion and Create a Signs of Change Booklet
Directions: Create a Foldable Booklet with 7 pages (use half sheets)
The following info should be on each page:
Pg 1—Physical Change and Definition
Pgs 2-3—Examples and pictures/diagrams of each
Pgs4-5—Chemical Change; Definition and “How will I know a chemical change has happened”
Pgs 6-10—On each one of these pages you should create a different “sign” that will let you know a chemical change has occurred. Ex a precipitate has formed
-Or-
CHARTING CHANGE
After reading the section create a poster or collage that shows both physical and chemical changes occurring to matter. Be sure to label and describe each change. Your description should include evidence or signs that would support what kind of a change is occurring
EXTEND:
Create a bumper sticker explaining the Law of Conservation of Mass with out using any words!
-Bumper sticker must accurately convey the Law of Conservation of Mass. Student must demonstrate understanding of Law.
-Bumper sticker must be neat with student care and thoroughness evident in the product(10pts—Homework)\
